FIRE EXPLORER

JOB DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Rincon= Valley Fire Protection District Explorer program is to provide young people with an opportunity to develop awareness, knowledge, and education of the fire service. A Fire Explorer is a non-paid representative of the Rincon Valley Fire Protection District to the community of the District. Fi= re Explorers will receive training to increase their knowledge of the District= and build their firefighting skill. They shall serve the District by assisting members of the engine com= pany and support units, according to the direction of the Fire Chief.=

POSITION REQUREMENTS

Candidate must:

= · Complete written consent form from parent/guardian

= · Be between 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) and 18 years of age

= · Be enrolled in High School with a GPA of 2.5= or higher

= · Must have the physical ability to perform essential tasks required by a Fire Explorer

= · Must have a medical evaluation prior to being accepted as a Fire Explorer

= · Become CPR certified within one year

= · Obtain Title 22 First Aid certification with= in one year

DUTIES

Under strict supervision,= Fire Explorers will:

Attend and participate in required fire training programs
Maintain 75% attendance of regular scheduled dril= ls and trainings per quarter
Study firefighting techniques
Assist in maintaining fire apparatus & equipm= ent
Maintain buildings & grounds as directed=
Participate in public service and public education programs
Assist fire crews in overhaul, and rehab operatio= ns
Assist fire crews in providing emergency medical = care to victims of accident, illness, and/or injury
Perform other duties as assigned

What is Exploring?

&= nbsp; Exploring is a division of the Boy Scouts of America and is for young men and women a= ges 14 to 20. Its purpose is to bring a character building, citizenship, traini= ng, and fitness program to the youth of America. Explorer posts can b= e organized by businesses, industries, churches, schools, civic clubs, and community organizations, which provide adult volunteer leaders, program resources, and meeting facilities. These posts specialize in a variety of career and recreational programs designed to provide service, social, citizenship, outdoor, career, and fitness activities. A number of these posts specialize= in fire fighting and many Explorers are interested in pursuing a career in the fire service.

&= nbsp; To meet the interest needs of such posts, the International Association of Fire Fighters, AFL-CLO, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and National Exploring Division have designed this cooperative program to promote the organization of fire fighting Explorer posts. The purpose of this program i= s to provide the youth of America the opportunity to look into the world of fire fighting and to participate = in worth while activities resulting in good character, citizenship and fitness= .

RINCON VALLEY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

DISTRICT INFORMATION

The Rincon Valley Fire Protection District (The District) is an independent special district governed by an elected board of directors. The District provides fire and emergency services within the District boundaries and to surrounding areas as contracted. The District lies approximat= ely 60 miles north of San Francisco and is adjace= nt to the City of Santa Rosa.

The service area is approximately 130 square miles.= The population serviced is approximately 30,000. The District is comprised of medium industrial, commercial, rural residential, suburban residential, urban interface, agricultural, and a county airport. Two major thoroughfares, U.S. Freeway 101 and State Highway 12, run through the District. Neighboring com= munities include Santa Rosa, = Rohnert Park, Sebastopol, Forestville, Kenwood, and Windsor.

The District consists of 4 fire stations, 2 of which are staffed 24 hours and volunteers staff the remaining 2 stations. Service is also provid= ed by a 24-hour facility within the City of Santa Rosa, which responds to District and City emergenc= ies. The District operates 18 pieces of equipment including staff and utility vehicles.

The District staff includes 21 full time employees (18 suppression= personnel and 3 Administrative Officers) and 2 part time Administrative Assistants. There are also 30-40 volunteer &am= p; part time firefighting personnel.

The annual estimated call volume is 3200 calls. Approximately two-thirds of the call volume is medically related. Department medical aid = is limited to first responder, AED, and EMT level. ALS and transport is conduc= ted by private providers.

In addition to emergency services, the District provides education= and training to the community. The District also actively conducts and particip= ates in Fire Prevention and Public Education programs.
